The Gray Whales make their way from Alaska to Mexico and back again between mid-December and mid-April. San Diego is a perfect place to see them swimming by, and there are lots of them. Very rarely does a day go by that we don’t see whales. There is a mix of predominantly Gray Whales, some Humpbacks, Fin Whales, Blue Whales and occasionally a rare Orca sighting.
Check out this great video taken from the ‘America’ recently! There are at least 2 Humpback whales, maybe more conducting some very well synchronized aerial ballet. We were a little way away at first but under full sail it didn’t take long for us to sail up quite close to them. Of course it helped that they kept breaching out of the water every 20 seconds for what seemed like a half hour. This was a whale trip looking for Blue Whales out wide from San Diego on the yacht ‘America’. We didn’t see a Blue this day but have seen quite a few since. One of our friends boats saw near 20 Blue Whales in a single day recently. I don’t expect that too many of us will get that lucky, but even seeing one Blue near as long as the 139 Ft yacht ‘America’ would be incredibly cool. We’re actually 95 feet on the water line and 105 feet long on the deck, so a near 100 foot whale beside us is a very cool thing.
We guarantee seeing lots of Gray Whales and maybe some Blues left over from summer. No doubt we’ll see a few Humpbacks as well. Dolphins…..did I mention Dolphins? Check our ‘Book Now’ button for the whale watching schedule.
